South Australia is Australia’s premier wine growing state, and Langhorne Creek is one of its cooler regions, allowing for better fruit definition. Vintage to vintage, it’s also very consistent. South Australia, located in the south-central part of the country, covers some of the most arid parts of the continent. The fourth largest of the country’s states and territories, it has a healthy Mediterranean climate with cool wet winters and hot dry summers. The average summer temperature is 29° C. (84° F.).
The state’s origins were unique in Australia as a freely-settled, planned British province. Official settlement began in December 1836. The aim was to establish the province as a center of civilization for free immigrants, promising civil liberties and religious tolerance.
The name is derived from an old drover’s path that runs through the Langhorne Creek appellation. The wine is 100% Shiraz, grown on 55-year-old vines. A vivid dark red color with a touch of purple, you will find aromas of bing cherries and other dark fruits. Luscious and full in the mouth, hints of cocoa and spicy licorice preclude the fine, lingering tannins. Enjoy it now, or cellar properly for up to five years. Serve at room temperature with burgers, pizza, sausages, pasta with meat sauce or medium aged cheeses.
SYRAH / SHIRAZ — Winemakers have discovered the versatility of this beefy black grape, used in blends (usually with Cabernet or Grenache), and in solo recipes. Vines are found in both Australia, where it’s called Shiraz, and in Argentina and South Africa where it’s called Syrah. Wines of this heritage are full-bodied, long-lived and fruit filled.
