Mark Johnson had an epiphany — If he started his own brewery, he’d have free beer for life! Fifteen months later, it was a reality. RJ Rockers Brewing Co. materialized in  April 1997. The mission: Provide delicious hand-crafted beer to all the people of the Upstate.

Originally a brewpub, Rockers quickly became the soul of downtown, serving as a catalyst for the revitalization of Morgan Square. Five and one-half years later, Rockers ended Chapter 1 as a brewpub in November, 2002, and began Chapter 2 – transitioning to a production brewery. During the following years, RJ Rockers flourished.

After maxing out capacity at their 1,200 barrel, windowless, cinder block location, Rockers returned to Downtown Spartanburg in August of 2009, anchoring the West End of the downtown Grain District. Their capacity is now 16,000 barrels, and their products are sold in fine stores everywhere. They are still moving forward.

Their slogan is “Handcrafted. Every Beer. Every Drop. Every Time.” Founder Mark Johnson has always brewed beer with an ever-elusive balance between rich American malts and aromatic, flavorful hops from the U.S. and abroad. He has used his pallet and creative touch to create his lineup of more than 18 outstanding beers.

Bell Ringer Double Pale Ale is a heavyweight, brewed with over 1.5 pounds of Tradition and Cascade hops per barrel. It’s robust backbone is due to a balanced blend of Caramel and Munich malts, which support the juicy, citrus aroma. Their second best seller.

Angry to the pit, Son of a Peach Wheat Ale is an unfiltered American Wheat, made with South Carolina peaches! Rocker’s best seller, it’s smooth, fluffy wheat body ends with a slight tart finish.

Featured Beer from RJ Rockers Brewery: Bell Ringer Double Pale Ale & Son of a Peach Wheat

DOUBLE IPA — RJ Rocker’s Bell Ringer Double Pale Ale: These ales are hoppy and crisp. This unique style offers intense hops (double the amount!) with more malt to balance it off. This top-fermented juicy copper citrus brew has big personality and flavor. Smooth, it pairs perfectly with big flavored dishes like BBQ’d foods, ham, and strong cheeses.

AMERICAN WHEAT ALE — RJ Rocker’s Son of a Peach Wheat Ale: From the top fermented ale family, hazy American wheat beer (revised from 6,000-year-old German recipes) has arrived! This golden Peach Wheat Ale is fruity (loaded with sweet peaches!), and shows tons of wheat body. Juicy and fluffy, pair it with Artesian cheeses, cold cuts & ham.
