One of the most beloved stories of all time, Snow White began as a German fairy tale, first published by the Brothers Grimm in 1812 as a part of the first edition of their collection, Grimms’ Fairy Tales. The original story was revised by the Brothers in 1854. The Dwarfs were not mentioned in either title, and they remained anonymous, not given names. While Snow White was always portrayed as the beautiful maiden trying to escape from the Evil Queen who was trying to kill her, and the dwarfs always cared for and rescued her, several major revisions were made throughout the history of the story.

The well-known mini-heroes of the tale were first named when the fable hit Broadway in 1912, at the ripe old age of one hundred. Five of the names used on stage were Blick, Glick, Snick, Flick, and Whick.

When Walt Disney recreated the story in 1937, he chose to call it Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and gave the seven mini-men much more prominent roles. Mr. Disney also gave them their beloved names, each a reflection of that dwarf’s personality. When Snow White and her handsome Prince put together the guest list for their wedding, they invited The Super Seven — Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Bashful, Sneezy and Dopey. Thank goodness Walt Disney and his crew were selective, as there were scores of names submitted for consideration, including some that today would be considered politically incorrect.
