If you’re unfortunate enough to deplete your stock of pizzas from your favorite Pizza of the Month Club before the next shipment arrives, and you are having a pizza-based anxiety attack, challenge your spontaneity and creativity. Whip one up yourself! In 30 minutes, you can create a one-of-a-kind pizza using basic ingredients you probably have hiding in plain sight in your refrigerator, cabinets and freezer.
From your cabinets or pantry comes flour for making your own dough, anchovies, sardines, tuna, whole tomatoes, pineapple chunks, mushrooms, garlic, artichoke hearts and vacuum packed pepperoni, maybe even pizza sauce. (And don’t forget the oils!)
In your spice cabinet hides the spices and fresh herbs you’ll need, like fresh basil, parsley leaves, marjoram, freshly ground black pepper, flavored salts, garlic cloves, and so on.
The refrigerator may reveal a tube or two of pizza dough (or dry yeast if you prefer homemade dough), pepperoni, sausage, salami, bacon, ham, sun-dried tomatoes, onions, green peppers, eggplant, olives, and any kind of cheese that melts. And don’t forget to search those left-overs for possibilities . . . chicken, ham, tomato sauce or left-over pasta sauce, steamed or sauteed vegetables. Ever tried chili on homemade pizza?
In the freezer you may locate a stash of cheeses, meats, or maybe a frozen pizza crust. Enjoy the hunt, and clean out the freezer! Once you’ve gathered the ingredients and have either selected or assembled your dough, you’re good to go!
Step 1: Preheat oven to 500°.
Step 2: If you are using already-made pizza dough, follow the directions on the tube. If you plan to create your own, lightly coat your pizza pan or screen with vegetable oil, and sprinkle with coarse yellow corn meal if you have it.
Step 3: Assemble the pizza, topping if off with a drizzle of olive oil. Bake for 15 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the top is bubbly.
In thirty minutes, you’ll have a terrific personalized one-of-a-kind pizza. And while the pizza is baking, you’ll have plenty of time to toss a salad, set the table, and make a very important phone call.
