Shipyard Brewing Company has been making award-winning hand-crafter beer in Maine for twenty years. The company has its roots in the picturesque seacoast village of Kennebunkport Harbor, where, in 1992, entrepreneur Fred Forsley and master brewer Alan Pugsley started Federal Jack’s Restaurant and Brew Pub, the birthplace of Shipyard Ales. Your favorite Beer of the Month Club is proud to introduce their finest to you this month. But first, a bit of Shipyard history . . .

Craft brewing was just starting in Maine, and Alan had recently moved there from England where he’d learned to brew under the legendary, late Peter Austin at the world-famous Ringwood Brewery in Hampshire. The launch of Federal Jack’s coincided with the birth of America’s craft beer industry, and just two years later, demand outpaced the brewing capacity at the pub.

Fred and Alan opened the doors of Shipyard Brewing Company in Portland in 1994. By 1996, the company was the fastest-growing craft brewery in the United States. They were proudly brewing twenty varieties of award-winning, English-style ales.

Shipyard beers are all about drinkability, consistency and balance, and every batch is brewed by hand in small batches, using only the finest ingredients – including top-fermenting, multi-strain yeast from Ringwood Brewery. Taste test these:

Longfellow Winter Ale is a full-bodied hybrid, a Porter/Scottish ale blend. Well balanced with malt hoppiness, it finishes long and dry. You’ll love that distinct roasted barley character!

Edgy Monkey Fist IPA is aggressive, unique and beautifully balanced. It’s an American IPA exploding with hop personality.

WINTER ALE – Shipyard’s Longfellow Winter Ale – Top-fermented Winter Ales are the brew of choice when served with hearty casseroles, stews and steaks. They are usually full-bodied, dark in color, with can’t miss roasted barley nuances.

INDIA PALE ALE – Shipyard’s Monkey Fist IPA – Another great top-fermented ale, it’s a hop-lovers delight, compliments of the generous amounts of Cascade, Warrior and Glacier hops. The beautiful flavor balance accentuates generous servings of buffalo shrimp, aged cheddar, smoked duck, blackened fish, Cajun fare and baked beans.
